This increase in cold tolerance should be noticed as 1) an increased survival rate of cells that freeze and thaw, 2) maintaining a higher growth rate at temperatures below 37°C, possibly shifting the minimal growth temperature down to near 0°C, or 3) both of the former. This section of the wiki contains all information about our project's setup, including its description and safety page.

Project

The project of Amsterdam aims at increasing the cold tolerance of E. coli by expressing and combining several chaperone proteins that are normally found in psychrophillic bacteria. As such, expressing these proteins will enable enhanced growth rates at temperatures below 37°C and shift the minimal growth temperature down from 7°C, possibly even allowing growth near 0°C.
