The development of a regional structure for iGEM will create a much more dynamic organization. There will be 3 regions in 2011, but there may be 4 or 5 regions in 2012. The Regional Councils will change membership regularly and will require on-site support.

To meet these needs, iGEM headquarters plans to establish a regional branch in Asia and one in Europe.
