The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is aimed at undergraduate student and is organised on a yearly basis by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Over the last years it has developed to be the most prestigiuos and most important contest in the growing field of synthetic biology. The underlying Idea is to use known or specifically designed genetic componenent, so-called Bio-Brick, to build biological systems in a creative and innovative manner. Eventually all BioBricks are made freely accessible to all scientist. This Open-Source-mindedness is a central aspect of the iGEM competition and accounts for large parts of the impact of the competition on science.
