Overall project

Goal of our project is producing alkane chains from glucose molecules. In nature, numerous biochemical pathways and enzymes exist making life adoptable to various environment even extreme conditions such as volcanic region. We focused on biochemical pathways and enzymes of glucose metabolism and luminescene luciferase from cyanobacteria to achieve the goal. Based on glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, enzymes coded in luciferase genes (lux operon) and FAC from a, glucose is turned into alkane chain about 14 carbon length. Synthesized fuel is functionally identical to petroleum from oil plants and can be used as bioenergy. Because produced alkane chain is part of carbon circulation cycle as it is synthesized from glucose, in vivo, the fuel is relatively environment-friendly which makes difference compare to ordinary petroleum increasing CO2 concentration at the atmosphere. Though production of alkane using bioblock could be not satisfied in commercial, yet, succeeding synthesis of alkane chain from glucose will show possibility of another way producing alternative energy source reducing the green house effect.
