Workshop Concept

With the workshop we intend not only to inform as many people as possible about synthetic biology but we also want to encourage them to start a thinking process. By giving them background information as well as examples of synthetic biology a basis for further discussions about ethics as well as security and safety is laid.

Theory:

The theoretical part that consists of three sub-presentation about basic principles of genetics,DNA, RNA and proteins.

Practical experiments including:

Isolation of banana DNA

GFP-Hydra

Blue white screening

Bioluminescent bacteria

BioBrick Designing with paper parts

Discussion:

Safety and security aspects of synthetic biology Moral issues

Report First Workshop

Our first workshop took place on Friday, September 2, in the Biocenter of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University. Our participants, aged 18 to 63 had little (based on high school) to no knowledge about the basics of molecular biology. Therefore we explained the localisation and function of DNA in the cell, the central dogma of molecular biology (DNA->RNA->Proteins)as well as the organisation of genes and operons in detail. Knowing now what DNA is, the participants finally isolated banana DNA.
