W.C. Cleaner
The aim of our team is to develop a biological alternative for disinfecting contaminated water using synthetic biology. Our target microorganisms are enterobacteria, but we'll focus in treating E. coli contaminated water. We will kill E. coli by means of colicin, an antimicrobial peptide produced by modified strains of Escherichia coli that are resistant to these proteins. The activity of these peptides will be controlled by a biological pH-stat that will use cyanobacteria to control pH. We plan to deliver a DIY kit that can disinfect water from enterobacteria and will be a prototype platform for killing other pathogens that cause diseases such as cholera, diarrhea and typhoid fever, ending in more than 2 million deaths in the last year according to the WHO Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality (World Health Organization, 2011).
