A communication problem
By merging engineering and biology fields, synthetic biology clearly revolutionizes how we conceptualize and approach living systems. The interdisciplinary nature of synthetic biology requires involvement of biologists, engineers, computer scientists and others.
Since our team composition was intentionally diverse to encourage the generation of new approaches by combining a range of different types of contributions, we rapidly observed that such configurations impeded the communication between team members during our brainstorming sessions. The situation was especially difficult for theoreticians involved in numerical simulation and biologists, who could not interact effectively using an unified and comprehensive language.
Therefore the team decided to address specifically this communication problem, which is central in the development of synthetic biology project.
