With the hope to know how students of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) think about the synthetic biology, we conducted a survey throughout the campus from 22/Jun/2011 to 23/Jun/2011, asking them to fill out a questionnaire on synthetic biology. Meanwhile, we introduced to them the origination and development of iGEM. Results below are based on sample size of 100 students.

Question one:
Are you familiar with synthetic biology?
a. Never heard about it
b. I know it, but not too much
c. I am familiar with it
d. I am just doing it

Question two:
What do you think synthetic biology focus on?
a. Nucleotide/Protein
b. Cell/ Organelle
c. Organism part (organ, tissue, etc.)
d. Integrated Organism

Question three:
Which of the subjects below do you think is related to synthetic biology the most tightly?
a. Bioinformatics
b. Engineering
c. Chemistry
d. Genetics

Question four:
How do you think about the future of synthetic biology?
a. It will result in the next technological revolution and bring benefit to the human race for a long time
b. It does not grasp the essence of life and will ultimately fail
c. It goes against the order of Nature and will probably play the same role with the nuclear weapon
d. I do not know

Question five:
Which of the human dreams below do you think synthetic biology could most probably realize?
a. To be spider man
b. Make something special to be our pets, for example, roachmouse
c. Make oil free
d. Conquer cancers and the like
e. Become millionaires
f. I do not know

Question fix:
Do you think the growth of synthetic biology is going against ethnic or not?
a. Yes
b. No
c. I do not know
