TNT, or 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, was first synthesized in 1863 by Wilbrand and subsequently used as the primary explosive by military forces in the world for several decades and continues to be utilized in industrial applications. The storage, usage, and disposal of TNT constitute a worldwide problem, as the chemical is both highly explosive and a potent toxin. TNT can enter into biological systems with remarkable ease and constitutes a significant risk to human health; potential consequences of TNT exposure include aplastic anemia, cataracts and spermatozoa malformancy. Furthermore, there is a high risk of contamination of food and water resources by TNT leakage from contaminated areas. Thus, removal of TNT is of substantial importance.
