Some bacteria have been genetically modified to detect certain metals in a water supply. However, it has not been done in yeast. If yeast is genetically engineered to do so, it would be a much safer procedure. The goal for this year is to create part of the gene that will eventually help us create a plasmid that will allow yeast to detect metal in a water supply, glowing red, using red fluorescent protein, once the metal has been detected.
