Welcome!

English:

The control of phytopathogens has been a headache for farmers and to agriculture all around the world. Several tons of crops are lost yearly, and the chemicals used for the control of different pests could be dangerous for the environment, the producers, and consumers. Here, we propose a bacteria mediated biocontrol, in order to avoid the pesticides, increase the rate of avoidance of plant disease, and improve the survival of the crops all around the world.

Please, be our guests and watch the video!

A Brief Approach to our Idea - Un breve acercamiento a nuestra idea

English:

The objective of our proposal is to generate genetically-modified bacteria that can detect and degrade chitin, and also send a signal to the host (plant) to jump-start the hypersensitive response in order to succesfully defend against fungi, oomycetes and other phytopathogens and to ease the detection of the plague for farmers and crop workers everywhere.

Using the bacteria Escherichia coli DH5α, the system will use two or three differently-modified bacteria in the system.

The first bacteria will detect the presence of Chitin and will produce chitinase and a signal molecule to engage the respone of the second bacteria. The second bacteria will react to the signal and will start to produce a signal to activate the hipersensitive response of the plant and will generate a scent of peppermint that can tell the farmer when there is an invasion. Additionaly, the second or third bacteria will generate a reactive that will control the growth of all three bacterias, avoiding the risk of overloading the host with bacteria.
