Summer Workshop

By Robert Mayall

This was the second conference put on by the Alberta Innovates Technology Futures for the three iGEM teams from Alberta. It was great to be able to communicate with the other two teams and see how their projects were progressing. On Saturday we spent the day with two entrepreneurs, and on Sunday we DID SOMETHING BUT I CANNOT REMEMBER. MUST ASK OTHER TEAM MEMBERS.

Saturday

We learnt a lot from the two entrepreneurs today, and the stories of how they got to where they are were extremely interesting. The first topic covered was how to condense our project descriptions into a 30 second script that could explain the project and keep someone's interest even if they had little to none in the way of scientific background. After practicing this a few times and hearing how the other two teams tried to condense their projects we took a break for lunch. The next topic discussed was that of intellectual property, and how it was important to protect your ideas. This was very interesting as few of us had considered this before the workshop.
